Business diagnosis for consultants

Understand the problem. Move forward with less uncertainty.

Phaseplane brings your client’s situation and evidence into one structured analysis. Examine what supports the findings, see what remains uncertain, and work out what to do next.

A working analysis of your client’s situation.

Phaseplane is software for making sense of complex business problems. It connects the current situation, the desired outcome and the available evidence into a diagnosis you can examine and revise.

You bring the context and professional judgment. Phaseplane helps make the structure of the problem explicit, including where the evidence supports an interpretation and where it does not.

What is Phaseplane?

Illustrative diagnostic example

The overload may start before the work reaches the team.

A simplified explanation, not a product screen or customer result.

A delivery team is falling behind. Requests arrive without agreed priorities. Requirements change after work begins. Time meant for delivery is spent clarifying decisions and doing work again.

Stage 3 of 3, A working explanation. The focus moves to the intake boundary. The explanation stays provisional: demand may also exceed capacity, and the example does not establish which contributes more.

In the example’s observationsProposed interpretationCurrent focus

Working diagnosis

The team may be absorbing uncertainty created upstream. Unresolved intake decisions become interruptions and rework, leaving less capacity for planned delivery.

Still unresolved

Demand may also exceed available capacity. The evidence would need to distinguish that from avoidable work created by the intake process.

What supports this reading?

Fictional observations used in this example:

  • Some requests enter without agreed acceptance criteria.
  • Priorities change after work has started.
  • The team repeatedly pauses to clarify decisions and revise work.
  • Managers settle conflicts case by case rather than using a shared intake rule.

Together they make the intake explanation plausible. They are not quotations from a real organization; in a real engagement each would need an identifiable source.

What this reading does not establish:

  • Not proof that leadership is the sole cause.
  • Does not establish that staffing is sufficient.
  • Does not establish causation.
  • Does not show a current product mapping interface.

What would help distinguish the explanations:

What evidence would distinguish total demand from avoidable work created by unresolved intake decisions?

Bring the evidence. Keep the reasoning open.

  1. Bring the situation

Describe what is happening, what needs to change and what stands in the way. Add the material you want the analysis to consider.

  2. Examine the diagnosis

Look at the proposed explanation alongside the evidence that supports, challenges or limits it.

  3. Revisit the analysis

Bring new evidence or a different interpretation into a new analysis round, rather than treating the first result as the final word.

How Phaseplane works

Working interpretation

Unresolved intake decisions may generate interruptions and rework downstream.

leaves open

Open question

Does demand also exceed the team’s capacity?

New evidence starts a new analysis round. The earlier round is kept.

Illustrative: how a finding relates to its evidence, using the diagnostic example. Not a product screen.

More room for the work only you can do.

Designed to reduce the work of assembling and revising analysis, leaving more time for understanding the client, testing interpretations and deciding what to do next.

And when there is a proposal on the table?

Commitment Check examines how far the supplied evidence justifies proceeding. It shows what prevents a stronger commitment and what would justify more, including when the evidence is not enough to proceed.

Phaseplane is actively evolving. We are inviting a small number of design partners to explore how it fits real consulting work.

Phaseplane is currently developed and operated by a solo founder. To keep the work hands-on and useful for each organization, only a small number of design partnerships are taken on at a time.

How a partnership starts

  1. IntroductionA first conversation about your work and whether there is a fit.
  2. Case working sessionIf there is a fit, we work through a case together.
  3. Scoped paid pilotScope and pricing depend on the organization and the work involved.

Let’s talk about the work you do.

Tell us a little about your consulting work and where Phaseplane might fit. The first conversation is an introduction, before any case session or pilot.
